The City of Cebu (Cebuano: Dakbayan sa Sugbo , Tagalog: Lungsod ng Cebu) is the capital of Cebu in the Philippines and is the second most important metropolitan center in the country. The city lies on the eastern shore of the island of Cebu and is the first Spanish settlement in the country. It is the country's main domestic shipping hub and is home to more than 80% of the country's inter-island shipping companies. Cebu is also the main hub, outside of the capital, of international flights into the country and is the most important center of commerce, trade, and industry in the Visayas and Mindanao, the southern parts of the country. It is because of this and other important aspects that Cebu City is dubbed the Queen City of the South. According to the official 2000 census, it has a population of 718,821 people in 147,600 households.
Cebu City is the center of a metropolitan area called Metro Cebu, which includes the cities of Mandaue, Lapu-Lapu, Talisay, Naga. Metro Cebu has a total population of more than 2 million people. The Mactan-Cebu International Airport, located in Lapu-Lapu City is only a twenty-minute drive away from Cebu City. To the northeast of the city are Mandaue City and the town of Consolacion, to the west are Toledo City, the towns of Balamban, and Asturias, to the south are Talisay City and the town of Minglanilla. Across Mactan Strait to the east is Mactan Island where Lapu-Lapu City is located.

History

As early as 3,000 years ago, Cebu, Zebu, Zzubu or Sugbu, was already a prosperous settlement before it was colonized by Spain. It had trade relations with China and the other countries of Southeast Asia.
On April 7, 1521, Ferdinand Magellan landed in Cebu. He was welcomed by Rajah Humabon also known as Raiah Hamabar, who, together with his wife and about 800 natives, were baptized by the Spaniards on April 14, 1521 and are considered to be the first Filipino Catholics. Magellan, however, failed to successfully claim the Philippines for the crown of Spain, having been slain in neighboring Mactan Island on April 27, 1521 by the chieftain Lapu-lapu.
On April 27, 1565, Miguel López de Legazpi, with Augustinian Friar Andrés de Urdaneta, landed in Cebu. Legazpi renamed the city on January 1, 1571, from San Miguel to Villa del Santissimo Nombre de Jesus. During this six year period, Cebu City was the capital of the newly established Spanish colony. The province of Cebu was created under Act No. 2711 on March 10, 1917. It is the home province of Sergio Osmeña, Sr. who succeeded Manuel L. Quezon as Commonwealth president during World War II.
In the early 1990s, the province of Cebu and specifically Cebu City experienced a surge in international investments, which coined the term "CEBOOM" to describe the booming economy.
In 2006, Cebu City was scheduled to co-host the ASEAN Summit along with neighboring Mandaue City and Lapu-Lapu City. However, due to the typhoon that swept through central Philippines on that month, the convention date was postponed to January 2007.
Cebu City has a land area of 291.2 km². Of this, 55.9 km² is classified as urban, while 235.2 km² is classified as rural. Its geographic coordinates are 10°17′0″N, 123°54′0″E. To the northeast of the city are Mandaue City and the town of Consolacion, to the west are Toledo City, the towns of Balamban, and Asturias, to the south are Talisay City and the town of Minglanilla. Across Mactan Strait to the east is Mactan Island where Lapu-Lapu City is located.
The city is politically subdivided into 80 barangays. These are grouped into two congressional districts, with 46 barangays in the northern district and 34 barangays in the southern district.
The city is an important cultural center in the Philippines. The city's most famous landmark is Magellan's Cross. This cross, now housed in a chapel, was supposedly planted by Ferdinand Magellan when he arrived in the Philippine Islands in 1521. It was encased in hollow tindalo wood in 1835 upon the order of the Augustinian Bishop Santos Gomez Marañon to prevent devotees from taking it home chip by chip. The same bishop restored the present template, or kiosk, located at the present Magellan street between City Hall and Colegio del Santo Niño. Revered by the Cebuanos, the Cross of Magellan is a symbol of the beginning of Christianity in the Philippines.
A few walks away from the Magellan's Cross is the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, an Augustinian church which was elevated to the rank of minor basilica in 1965 during the 400th year celebrations of the Christianization of the Philippines held in Cebu. The church, which was the first to be established in the islands, is built of hewn stone and features the country's oldest relic, the image of the Santo Niño de Cebu.
Cebu City is also host to the popular Sinulog festival, held every third Sunday of January in honor of Santo Niño, the "Holy Child". The Sinulog is a dance ritual of pre-Spanish origin. The dancer moves two steps forward and one step backward to the rhythmic sound of drums. This movement resembles somewhat the current (sulog) of the river. Thus, the Cebuanos called it Sinulog.
When the Spaniards arrived in Cebu, Pigafetta offered, as a baptismal gift, to Hara Amihan, wife of Rajah Humabon and later named Juana, the image of the Santo Niño (Child Jesus). With Magellan gone, the natives likewise honored the Santo Niño with their Sinulog. Because the Augustinian missionaries appreciated native culture, the Sinulog was preserved but limited to honoring the Santo Niño. Once the Santo Niño church was built in the 1500's, the faithful started performing the Sinulog in front of the church, the devotees offering candles and the dancers shouting "Pit Señor!"

During the annual feast of the Santo Niño, held every 3rd Sunday of January, the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño, which houses the original icon, turns into a dancing hall after the solemn mass, with all the devotees executing the Sinulog. The dance continues during the procession in front of the carroza which bears the statue along the streets of Cebu up to late evening.
In 1980, the city authorities of Cebu made the Sinulog part and parcel of the religious feast of the Santo Niños. A mardi-gras atmosphere was added, the innovation becoming more colorful each year. The religious and the earthy sometimes overlap each other but, as a whole, there is much fun for Cebuanos and tourists alike who find in the Santo Niño festival that part of every one's childhood that must stay like Santa Claus and halloween.
In the early 2000's, one can see the widening gap between the secular Sinulog hosted by the City of Cebu and the religious Sinulog of the Agustinian priests. While most enjoy the secular celebrations, those of religious persuasion have been dismayed by the commercialization of the religious holiday.

Dipolog is a 2nd class city and the capital of the province of Zamboanga del Norte on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. Geographically, the city is surrounded by rolling hills to the southeast and the Sulu Sea to the north.
Dipolog is known for its wild orchids and its sardine industry which stems from the rich fishing area off its shores. It is known as the "Gateway to Western Mindanao" through the Western Nautical Highway [1] and has also been called the "Bottled Sardines Capital of the Philippines."[2]
Dipolog can be reached by plane via Dipolog Airport or by ferry at the nearby Pulauan Port[3] in Dapitan City. The construction of a Roll-on Roll-off facility at Barangay Galas will allow for the eventual transfer of the service to Dipolog while retaining inter-island operations at Pulauan, which is soon to become a base port.
In 2006, a study by the National Statistics Coordination Board (NSCB) found Dipolog City to be the wealthiest city per capita in the Zamboanga Peninsula. Within Dipolog, 23.15% of the population was estimated to be living below the poverty line (households with a per capita expenditure of under $1 a day). In comparison, the NCSB estimated Zamboanga City and Pagadian City as having poverty incidences of 23.81% and 27.15%, respectively. In startling contrast, the poverty rate for the entire province of Zamboanga del Norte (with individuals in both rural and urban settings) was estimated to be 40.36%. Zamboanga del Norte is one of the Philippines's poorest provinces with a poverty incidence rate of 64.6% in 2003, an increase from 47% in the 2000 statistical figures.[4]
A popular city attraction is the foreshore boulevard which, though still in its second phase of construction, has become a popular haven for exercise and leisure. It is also the site for various celebrations and festivals in the city. In the third phase of the project, the length of the boulevard will be extended to reach the seaport in Barangay Galas.

The Philippine Islands became a Spanish colony during the 16th century; they were ceded to the US in 1898 following the Spanish-American War. In 1935 the Philippines became a self-governing commonwealth. Manuel QUEZON was elected president and was tasked with preparing the country for independence after a 10-year transition. In 1942 the islands fell under Japanese occupation during WWII, and US forces and Filipinos fought together during 1944-45 to regain control. On 4 July 1946 the Republic of the Philippines attained its independence. The 20-year rule of Ferdinand MARCOS ended in 1986, when a "people power" movement in Manila ("EDSA 1") forced him into exile and installed Corazon AQUINO as president. Her presidency was hampered by several coup attempts, which prevented a return to full political stability and economic development. Fidel RAMOS was elected president in 1992 and his administration was marked by greater stability and progress on economic reforms. In 1992, the US closed its last military bases on the islands. Joseph ESTRADA was elected president in 1998, but was succeeded by his vice-president, Gloria MACAPAGAL-ARROYO, in January 2001 after ESTRADA's stormy impeachment trial on corruption charges broke down and another "people power" movement ("EDSA 2") demanded his resignation. MACAPAGAL-ARROYO was elected to a six-year term as president in May 2004. The students paraded for about 15 minutes before police intervenedA group of students in the Philippines capital Manila have stripped off to protest against the country's underinvestment in education.
"The naked truth is that the government never treats education as a basic right," the students said.
The 15 protesters paraded at a busy intersection waving placards, before being moved on by police.
Protesters complained that the government was spending far more repaying its debts than on education.
The students said they would suffer from a shortage of nearly 50,000 classrooms and 3.5m desks and books in 2005.

Rizal was implicated in the activities of the nascent rebellion and in July of 1892 was deported to Dapitan in the province of Zamboanga (in Mindanao). There he built a school, a hospital and a water supply system. He taught and engaged in farming and horticulture. Abaca, known as Manila hemp, then the vital raw material for cordage was a memorial.
The boys' school, in which they learned English, a prescient if weird option then, was considered light years ahead of its time.[13] It was much along the lines of Gordonstoun and wholly in tune with Baden Powell in its aims of inculcating a resourceful and self-sufficient character in young men. They would later enjoy successful lives as farmers and honest government officials. One, a Muslim, became a Datu, and another, Jose Aseniero, who was with Rizal throughout the life of the school, became Governor of Zamboanga.
In Dapitan, the Jesuits mounted a great effort to secure his return to the fold, led by Father Francisco de Paula Sanchez, his former professor, who failed in his mission. The task was resumed by Father Pablo Pastells, the most prominent member of the Order, in correspondence with the prisoner on profound philosophical questions. In what a theologian[24] considers a magnificent, timeless and revealing letter, Rizal sails close to the ecumenism familiar to us today:
"We are entirely in accord in admitting the existence of God. How can I doubt his when I am convinced of mine. Whoso recognizes the effect recognizes the cause. To doubt God is to doubt one's own conscience, and in consequence, it would be to doubt everything; and then what is life for? Now then, my faith in God, if the result of a ratiocination may be called faith, is blind, blind in the sense of knowing nothing. I neither believe nor disbelieve the qualities which many attribute to him; before theologians' and philosophers' definitions and lucubrations of this ineffable and inscrutable being I find myself smiling. Faced with the conviction of seeing myself confronting the supreme Problem, which confused voices seek to explain to me, I cannot but reply: 'It could be; but the God that I foreknow is far more grand, far more good: Plus Supra!...I believe in (revelation); but not in revelation or revelations which each religion or religions claim to possess. Examining them impartially, comparing them and scrutinizing them, one cannot avoid discerning the human 'fingernail' and the stamp of the time in which they were written... No, let us not make God in our image, poor inhabitants that we are of a distant planet lost in infinite space. However brilliant and sublime our intelligence may be, it is scarcely more than a small spark which shines and in an instant is extinguished, and it alone can give us no idea of that blaze, that conflagration, that ocean of light. I believe in revelation, but in that living revelation which surrounds us on every side, in that voice, mighty, eternal, unceasing, incorruptible, clear, distinct, universal as is the being from whom it proceeds, in that revelation which speaks to us and penetrates us from the moment we are born until we die. What books can better reveal to us the goodness of God, his love, his providence, his eternity, his glory, his wisdom? 'The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament showeth his handiwork'."[13]
It was delicadeza in the sternest argument.
Ever the best friend, Blumentritt sustained him, keeping him in touch with European friends and fellow-scientists who wrote a steady stream of letters which arrived in Dutch, French, German and English and which baffled the censors no end, often delaying their transmittal. Those four years of his exile coincided with the development of the Philippine Revolution from inception and to its final breakout, which, from the viewpoint of the court which was to try him, suggested his complicity in it.[13] He condemned the uprising, although all the members of the Katipunan made him honorary president and used his name as a war-cry. He was to face a court not of reason but one of emotion.
Near the end of his exile he met and courted the stepdaughter of a patient, an Irishwoman named Josephine Bracken. He was unable to obtain an ecclesiastical marriage because he would not return to the religion of his youth and was not known to be clearly against revolution. He nonetheless considered Josephine to be his wife and the only person mentioned in the poem, Farewell, sweet stranger, my friend, my joy...[26]

On December 28, 2007, as highlight of Dapitan City's 2nd Handuraw Festival, former Congressman Romeo Jalosjos launched at the Jose Rizal Memorial State College his book "The Dapitan Correspondence of Dr. Jose Rizal and Dr. Ferdinand Blumentrit", a compilation on letters of the Dr. Jose Rizal, and his friend Dr. Ferdinand Blumentrit.[1]

On December 28, 2007, Salug Mayor Jesus Lim, president of the Zamboanga del Norte Mayors’ League led 25 mayors of Zamboanga del Norte who protested the Department of Justice's incarceration of former congressman Romeo Jalosjos. Flags in their respective towns were flown at half mast and huge black ribbons were displayed at town halls.[2]

CUTUD (AFP) — Dix-neuf personnes ont été crucifiées vendredi dans le nord des Philippines lors des traditionnelles cérémonies du vendredi saint, à l'occasion de la célébration de la Passion du Christ.
Pour la 22e année, le village de Cutud, à 70 km au nord de Manille, s'est ainsi transformé en lieu de pèlerinage.
Devant des pèlerins s'autoflagellant et des milliers de touristes qui avaient bravé la chaleur accablante, 19 hommes ont revécu le chemin de croix du Christ avant d'être crucifiés en signe de pénitence et afin de demander le pardon.
"C'est douloureux et difficile. Mais je continuerai à le faire aussi longtemps que je le peux. C'est mon offrande à Dieu", a témoigné Ruben Enaje, catholique de 47 ans
Les uns après les autres, les 19 hommes ont été crucifiés sur trois croix érigées dans le village. Des clous leur ont été enfoncés dans les paumes et les pieds. Les martyrs volontaires restent ainsi crucifiés une dizaine de minutes avant que les croix soient redescendues et les clous retirés.
Les pèlerins sont généralement poussés au sacrifice par un besoin de remercier Dieu de les avoir guéris d'une maladie, eux ou un membre de leur famille.
"L'Eglise ne recommande pas ce genre de pratiques car elle s'inscrit contre l'autoflagellation", a réagi le père Norman Vitug, prêtre de la paroisse locale.
"Mais nous ne pouvons remettre en question l'expression de leur foi. Nous ne savons pas ce qu'ils ressentent en faisant cela, donc nous les respectons", a-t-il ajouté.
Les services sanitaires ont également mis en garde les candidats à la crucifixion, leur recommandant de se faire vacciner contre le tétanos.
